Ooh, what a nice album.

Perhaps the only thing that can be said about ‘Let my heart not become blind’ is the length. Only twice a mere 16 minutes per (LP) side. Band leader Hans Bos returns with MonThruSun after the successful band Soft Parade (contracted by Dave Stewart’s label, Eurythmics). Together with Robin Berlin on piano and guitar and Dick Brouwers on bass, influences from Velvet Underground and Kevin Morby are wonderfully kneaded together, supplemented with touches of Beatles in the harmonic choirs.

And ok, the songs are short, but after the closing notes they keep on wanting more. Let my heart not be come blind ranges from power in simplicity to expertly forged pop songs. The beautiful song Family deservedly plays a key position in the internationally acclaimed film ‘Hemelrijken’. Hekkensluiter Home emerges as a mini pop symphony supplemented with a string and wind section and is thus a wonderfully beautiful monumental conclusion to a musical anthology that will hopefully see a sequel soon.

Wellicht het enige dat op ‘Let my heart not become blind’ valt aan te merken is de lengte. Slechts twee keer een krappe 16 minuten per (lp)kant. Bandleider Hans Bos keert na de succesvolle band Soft Parade (gecontracteerd door het label van Dave Stewart, Eurythmics) terug met MonThruSun. Samen met onder andere Robin Berlijn op piano en gitaar en Dick Brouwers op bas worden invloeden van Velvet Underground en Kevin Morby heerlijk samen gekneed, aangevuld met vleugjes Beatles in de harmonische koortjes.

En ok, de liedjes zijn kort, maar smaken na de slotnoten steeds naar meer. ‘Let my heart not be come blind’ varieert van kracht in eenvoud tot vakkundige gesmede popsongs. Het prachtige liedje Family speelt een terechte sleutelpositie in de internationaal gelauwerde film ‘Hemelrijken’. Hekkensluiter Home ontpopt zich als een mini popsymfonie aangevuld met een strijk- en blaassectie en is zo een prachtig mooi monumentaal slot van een muzikale bloemlezing die hopelijk snel een vervolg gaat kennen.

MonThruSun Brings Back Sixties Romance

In the fine print, Dave Stewart is thanked. The Eurythmics, yes. That’s how it is: in the nineties, Hans Bos was in the Dutch band Soft Parade, which was under contract with Stewart’s label Anxious. Soft Parade made catchy sixties music, but the real breakthrough never happened.

Bos’ career has a wonderful continuation with the project MonThruSun. Let My Heart Not Become Blind, the debut album of the loosely established group, was already finished a year ago, but is only now officially released due to the pandemic.
Bos, who sings and plays a long list of instruments, is still well into the sixties, but this time The Velvet Underground seems to be the main source of inspiration. And not The Velvet Underground of wild and savage songs about drugs and sex, but those of romantic and sweet songs like Pale Blue Eyes and Sunday Morning.

ICBWIW is rocking hard, the rest is modest. Strong melodies, lovely choirs and a sound that sounds casual and well cared for at the same time. Among the musicians that Bos has collected in MonThruSun, we meet virtuoso Robin Berlin. He can go wild on his guitar, but he is serving here. On Let My Heart Not Become Blind the songs are the boss.

Bij de kleine lettertjes wordt Dave Stewart bedankt. Die van The Eurythmics, ja. Dat zit zo: in de jaren negentig speelde Hans Bos in de Brabantse band Soft Parade, die onder contract stond bij Stewarts label Anxious. Soft Parade maakte aanstekelijke sixtiesmuziek, maar de echte doorbrak bleef uit.

Bos’ carrière krijgt een prachtig vervolg met het project MonThruSun. Let My Heart Not Become Blind, het debuutalbum van de los-vaste groep, was een jaar geleden al klaar, maar wordt vanwege de pandemie pas nu officieel uitgebracht.
Bos, die zingt en een waslijst aan instrumenten bespeelt, zit nog steeds flink in de sixtieshoek, maar dit keer lijkt The Velvet Underground de voornaamste bron van inspiratie. En dan niet The Velvet Underground van wilde en woeste songs over drugs en seks, maar die van romantische en lieve liedjes als Pale Blue Eyes en Sunday Morning.

In ICBWIW wordt stevig gerockt, voor de rest gaat het ingetogen toe. Sterke melodieën, heerlijke koortjes en een sound die ongedwongen en verzorgd tegelijk klinkt. Onder de muzikanten die Bos in MonThruSun heeft verzameld, treffen we virtuoos Robin Berlijn. Die kan geweldig tekeer gaan op zijn gitaar, maar stelt zich hier dienend op. Op Let My Heart Not Become Blind zijn de liedjes de baas.

MonThruSun is Hans Bos, former singer and songwriter of the Soft Parade from Tilburg. The CD single When Violets Meet served as an alarm clock during my Highschool exam in 1993. Every morning it started playing at six o’clock, which was superior slow waking up.
The album Puur (1992), produced by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, contained exciting ‘under the skin’ Indie pop and was indebted to the Velvet Underground. That sound stood out in the noisy nineties.

MonThruSun often plays relaxed guitar pop songs with a slightly rootsy slant. The mystical edge of the Soft Parade is gone for Let My Heart Not Become Blind is a direct album about life and love in the here and now. In addition to compact songs such as Awesome and Make Wishes, the beautifully decorated pieces Home and Family, It’s Our Blood, with strings and horns, are excellent showcases for the album. Just like in the Soft Parade, a female second voice from Tinca Veerman works well here at Bos. His former band members Eric Maas and Dick Brouwers play along, as do guitarist Robin Berlin and drummer/producer Remko Schouten. Six o’clock in the morning it’s too earley to put the music on this time, but after my first coffee Let My Heart Not Become Blind goes well.

Achter MonThruSun gaat Hans Bos schuil, voorheen zanger en songschrijver van de Soft Parade uit Tilburg. Daarvan fungeerde de cd-single When Violets Meet als wekker tijdens mijn Havo-examen in 1993. Elke ochtend begon ie om zes uur te spelen, superieur lang-
zaam wakker worden was dat. Het door Dave Stewart van de Eurythmics geproduceerde album Puur (1992) bevatte onderhuids spannende en aan de ingetogen Velvet Underground schatplichtige indie-pop. Dat geluid viel op in de luidruchtige nineties. Als MonThruSun brengt Bos veelal ontspannen gitaarpopsongs met licht rootsy inslag. Het mystieke randje van de Soft Parade is eraf, Let My Heart Not Become Blind is een directe plaat over het leven en de liefde in het hier en nu. Naast compacte liedjes als Awesome en Make Wishes zijn de fraai met strijkers en blazers opgetuigde stukken Home en Family, It’s Our Blood prima uithangborden voor het album. Net als in de Soft Parade werkt een vrouwelijke tweede stem hier van Tinca Veerman goed bij Bos. Zijn oud-bandleden Eric Maas en Dick Brouwers spelen mee, net als gitarist Robin Berlijn en drummer/producer Remko Schouten. Om zes uur ‘s ochtends hoef ik ‘m nog niet te horen, maar vanaf de koffie gaat Let My Heart Not Become Blind er goed in.
